Superman

Superman has been very popular as a comic strip and a film. The Superhero created in the comic strip of Superman was adapted into a movie in 1978. Richard Donner directed the 1978 Superman who is originally a creation of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Christopher Reeve who played the role of on screen Superman, gained overnight popularity after the movie was released.

Plot of Superman

The film begins in the planet of Krypton, where young Kal-EL was born and his spectacles and teen age days are projected with in their true gleeful color in the movie. As Kal grows up he becomes a gullible reporter for a press house. Lex Luthor the villain of Superman makes things difficult for Clark Kent and we can see shadows of trouble in his relationship with Lois Lane.

The plot of Superman is an interesting combination of science fiction with fantasy. Extra Terrestrial animals launch aircrafts which finally land on planet earth and the story of Superman builds up.

Technical aspects of Superman

Alexander Salkind along with Ilya Salkind, were in charge of the production of the movie. In consultation with the cinematographer and the director, a perfect set was artificially created for the shooting of the movie. Geoffrey Unsworth showed an uncanny talent in creating the virtually impossible scenes on screen. Camera work and intelligent use of props helped the directors recreate the action events from the pages of the comic strip.

Stuart Baird and Michael Ellis, the editors of Superman were also patient with their task of mixing and editing the shots.

Without their commendable efforts, Superman would never have created such a craze among the youngsters of the 1980s. The entire film of Superman lasts for 143 minutes. In such a short span of time, major actions and superhuman deeds of Superman have been portrayed with great finesse in the movie.

The special effects of Superman deserve a special mention. The fortress of solitude was recreated within the studio as a full fledged set for the movie. Most of the indoor shots were taken in the Pinewood Studios. The flying scenes of Superman involved flying an artificial dummy through a canon ball. Shots were also taken where Superman can be seen flying amidst red lava erupting from a volcano.



Zooming cameras were also used with a steady picture of Christopher Reeve in the foreground. The background consisted of receding images. Both of these items when seen together did put up a brilliant image of a flying Superman.
