Spider- Man 2 was produced after the huge success of its prequel Spider- Man. But Sider- Man 2 offers a different flavor and it is emotionally a bit darker than the first movie version of the character of Peter Parker. The first film serves as an exposition to the character while the second one, Spider- Man 2 focuses on the development of the same. The audiences are already aware of the incident of the radioactive spider before they enter the movie hall for Spider- Man 2. So, the director does need feel worthwhile spending spend time on that incident and moves on to the next phase straightaway.
Spider- Man 2 allows the audience to know Peter more as a person than a superhero. In this sequel, he tries to hide his love emotions. Though he is a superhero, he is pining for a normal life. He wants to be like any other man with family and friends. The theme is a tussle between his sense of responsibility and the love interest. The cameo roles have been played by a few renowned actors who have tried their best to generate laughter. Comic relief was important in this film as this movie is emotionally more intense than its prequel. The director Sam Raimi did a wonderful job in balancing the seriousness with a subtle sense of humor.

The visual effects are even more advanced and subtle in Spider- Man 2. It becomes difficult to distinguish real from the computer generated ones. There is no jarring visual effect in the entire movie and Spider- Man 2 surely tops the list as far as special effects driven movies go. It is actually not fair to compare the sequel with the prequel but the comparison comes naturally. Raimi never lets his audience forget that Peter Parker is a man of flesh and blood though his actions are computer generated ones. The special effects seem to be quite convincing in the context of the story.

The director first takes us to the world of fancy and satisfies the rejected souls. But he never forgets that fancy cannot last forever and so we need to know the human emotions of Peter Parker, we need to get back to hard reality. And herein comes the varied aspects of the complexities in the human relations. The director has got a sound understanding of human psychology and Spider- Man 2 is a fine manifestation of that understanding.
