Guy and Geneviève made love on the previous night of the day Guy left for the war front. Geneviève becomes pregnant and thinks that Guy has abandoned her. Her mother insists her to get married soon and she gets married to a handsome Parisian jeweler, Roland Cassard. He accepts her in spite of the fact that she is bearing the child of another man. Eventually she embraces a life in the higher society.
After returning back Guy learns about Genevieve’s marriage and the fact that the umbrella store has been closed down. Initially he tried a lot to get back to his previous life, but was unable to do that. Guy gives up his job after a bitter argument with his boss. He gets into drinking after that and starts sleeping with a prostitute. Ironically, the original name of that prostitute was also Genevieve. After he returns home, Madeleine confesses her love for him in blubbered eyes and Guy gets married to Madeleine.
