The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is actually the dubbed form of the French movie Les Parapluies de Cherbourg. This is a musical block-buster made in 1964. Jacques Demy directed this movie and gave it the perfection of an artist. Nino Castelnuovo and Catherine Deneuve have played the role of the main protagonists in this movie. Michel Legrand penned the wonderful lyrics of the songs in this movie. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is actually the second one of the trilogy by Demy in which almost all the same actors have acted. The film got released after Lola (released in 1961) and just before The Young Girls of Rochefort (released in 1967).

Madame Emery along with her daughter Genevieve (Deneuve) used to sell umbrellas at the tiny coastal town of Cherbourg in France. Genevieve is madly in love with Guy Castelnuovo. He is a handsome smart auto mechanic who stays at the house of his godmother. Madeleine is a suave, dedicated caregiver staying in the family. Ellen Farner played the role of the caregiver. This woman also loved Guy. The turning point comes when Guy leaves to fight in the Algerian War. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the landmark movies in the history of Hollywood cinema.

Guy and Geneviève made love on the previous night of the day Guy left for the war front. Geneviève becomes pregnant and thinks that Guy has abandoned her. Her mother insists her to get married soon and she gets married to a handsome Parisian jeweler, Roland Cassard. He accepts her in spite of the fact that she is bearing the child of another man. Eventually she embraces a life in the higher society.

After returning back Guy learns about Genevieve’s marriage and the fact that the umbrella store has been closed down. Initially he tried a lot to get back to his previous life, but was unable to do that. Guy gives up his job after a bitter argument with his boss. He gets into drinking after that and starts sleeping with a prostitute. Ironically, the original name of that prostitute was also Genevieve. After he returns home, Madeleine confesses her love for him in blubbered eyes and Guy gets married to Madeleine.

The movie was nominated for the Prix Louis-Delluc in the year 1963. In the year 1964 this movie was awarded the Grand Prix award. This movie also bagged the critic’s prize for the best movie at Cannes Film Festival. In 1965 it got the award by the French Syndicate of Film Critics. It also got nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film in the year 1964.
