The story of Pretty Woman centers round a wealthy businessman and a prostitute and their developing relationship. Edward Lewis (played by Richard Gere), a wealthy businessman meets a prostitute Vivian Ward (played by Julia Roberts) and hires her to escort him in business functions and that's how their relationship deepens gradually.
Meeting Vivian on road, Edward Lewis asks her the way to Hollywood Boulevard. Vivian makes a mistake and thinks Edward is trying to find a 'date' with her. Edward agrees to pay Vivian for showing the direction to Hollywood Boulevard and gets inside the car.

After reaching his penthouse in Beverly Hills, Vivian finds that Edward did not have any such intentions as she thought and decides to get back to her place by taxi. But Edward afterwards discovers Vivian standing in the bus stand and hires her for an hour but eventually it gets extended to a night.
Instead of doing anything to Vivian, Edward discloses his business plans to her and request her to escort him in business functions. Edward fixes a date with businessmen James and David Morse and gives Vivian some money to buy a dinner dress. He also gives a lesson to Vivian about table manners. Edward and Vivian attend more business functions but things take a major turn when Vivian discovers that Edward has revealed her real identity to a businessman named Phil. Vivian says she is hurt and leaves Edward and heads back home.

Before leaving for New York, Edward wants to meet Vivian once again and offers her money, a car and a condo. Vivian refuses and tells Edward about her dream where she is rescued by a knight riding a white horse and want a 'fairy tale' finish from Edward. Though Edward refuses to offer that to Vivian, at the end of the movie, he meets her to apologize for his behavior and they end up at the staircase kissing each other and later on getting married.
