The story of the movie is based on the structure of a complete Italian-American community. Almost all the characters in this story belong to that particular community. In nearly all the scenes the characters speak the language of English. The main plot revolves around the life story of Loretta Castorini, the character played by Cher. This 37 year old lady is quite rational, cool and sober by nature. Her composed and suave nature has drawn the attention of men.
In the first scene this lady is found in a funeral parlor snubbing the person from whom she was getting her income tax report done. She was clearly unhappy with the owner of the parlor for the muddle he did with her receipts and documents. Throughout the movie, the main protagonist is shown to be neatly dressed in formal and gorgeous clothing. This lady, Loretta Castorini (Cher) is capable of balancing her professional and personal life in the perfect way.

This lady who leads her life in a very orderly manner stumbles into a very clumsy and jittery man called Rohnny Cammareri. Suddenly Loretta is swept off her feet and she is very much in love with Rohnny. The character of Ronny Cammareri has been played by Nicholas Cage.
There are several sub plot of the movie entwined around the main plot. The characters, who have helped the sub plot of this movie to develop, belong to the large family of Loretta and her parents. Loretta’s parents got married to eternalize their love affair. Very soon they were disillusioned by the bare reality of life that eventually made their love wean away. Infidelity of Loretta’s father totally devastated the family.

Outstanding performance by Cher, won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Olympia Dukakis got the Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actress. Cher also bagged the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
