Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Erich Seagal, Love Story was made in the year 1970. It is very well known as a tear-jerking tragedy. Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal played the male and female lead roles in the film and it also marked the debut of Tomy Lee Jones, who was totally unknown at that time. The film was directed by Arthur Hiller.
Thanks to the novel written by Erich Seagal, the theme of Love Story is very sad yet romantic. The story is all about the relationship between two college students, their marriage, their struggle with life and finallydeath. Oliver Barret (played by Ryan O'Neal), a boy from a wealthy family, is a student of Harvard University. He meets Jennifer Cavilleri (played by Ali MacGraw), a student of the Radcliffe College, who comes from a middle-class family. Jennifer or Jenny (as called by Oliver) and Oliver fall in love with each other and they decide to get married against their parents’ wishes.
Oliver's decision to marry Jennifer leads to breaking off ties between father and son. Without his financial support, it becomes very difficult for Oliver to continue his study in Harvard Law School and eventually Jennifer starts working as a teacher in a private school. Oliver anyhow manages to complete his graduation as a top-ranker from his class and joins a New York law firm.

At the age of 24, the young couple decide to have a child but Jennifer fails to conceive. Oliver takes his wife to a doctor and comes to know that Jenny is very ill and her days are limited. Oliver decides to hide the fact from Jenifer and tries to lead a normal life. But Jennifer discovers the truth at a later stage and starts expensive cancer treatment, which becomes unaffordable for Oliver. Finding no way out, Oliver finally begs financial help from his father hiding the fact from him. Just before she dies, Jennifer asks her father to arrange her funeral. When she is about to die she does not want to lose any moment to be with Oliver. She asks him to embrace her in his arms.
