Doctor Zhivago is basically a war film that features a wonderful kind of dramatization of screenplay and romance imbued in the tragic undercurrent of the script of this movie. David Lean directed this movie based on the story by Boris Pasternak. The best part of the movie is the silence of the affection between two lovers.
This particular movie is based on a tumultuous situation of the period between 1905 and 1921. The incidents like, Bloody Sunday, World War I, the Russian Civil War, Russian Revolution, 1905 Revolution had created a world wide state of turmoil that was chosen as the base for the novel by Pasternak. A specific date, when exactly the story of this movie gets started is not mentioned exactly, but it is assumed that the time must be some time in the 1950’s.
Plot of Doctor Zhivago is such. Lara or Larissa, the heroine of the movie marries Pasha, but her original love is Zhivago. She is the inspiration for the poetry Zhivago writes. Zhivago loves his wife. The whole story is in the form of narration done by Yevgraf, the half brother of Yuri. He is on the search for the daughter of Yuri and Lara. Later on he finds out that the girl, Tonya is the child of Lara and Doctor Zhivago.
David Lean more popular for his renowned work Lawrence of Arabia planned to deal with a much more intense storyline dominated by the aspect of Romance.

Omar Sharif was cast as Sherif Ali, the right hand man of Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia. Omar was immensely astonished as he was asked to play the role of the main protagonist in Doctor Zhivago. Initially, it was decided that Peter O Toole would play the role of Zhivago. All the actors cast in this movie did full justice to their individual roles.
The original novel was banned in Soviet Union and that is why a major portion of this movie was shot in Spain. The entire set reflecting the classic look of Moscow was built just outside Moscow. The scenes of World War I, where both Lara and Doctor Zhivago featured, were shot in Soria.
