Veteran actor Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley, Chris Cooper, Peter Gallagher and Allison Junnay gave outstanding performance in the film which is also a major reason behind its huge success in the theaters. The story of American Beauty is a little bit unusual compared to other romantic films. The movie is about the life of a 42 year old man Lester Burnham (played by Kevin Spacey), who is not at all happy with her wife Carolyn (Bening) and their teenager daughter Jane (Birch). But when Lester meets Angela Hayes, Jane's best friend and classmate, he finds new motivation for living once again. Lester feels happy when he is with Angela and start leading life the way Angela does.

Lester finds fun in annoying Carolyn, who is quite offended with her husband's changed behavior like smoking and flirting with Angela. By that time a conservative family comes as the neighbor of the Burnham. Jane finds Ricky, who is a member of the family, videotaping her through the window of her bedroom.
Getting frustrated about her husband's changed behavior, Carolyn suddenly gets engaged in an extramarital affair with Buddy King (played by Gallaghar) and things start getting worse. Lester discovers her wife with her lover and Carolyn decides to confront her husband with a gun as she believes that Lester has ruined her life.

The climax of American Beauty is quite tragic. In the closing scene of the movie Lester dies as the description of his life flashes in front of his eyes with his last narration.
