Francis Ford Coppola and the greatest novelist and playwright Mario Puzo joined hands to release the sequel to the original Godfather movie, The Godfather Part II, on 20th December 1974. Being a sequel to the original masterpiece, The Godfather Part II, though earned a name in Hollywood, couldnot surpass the original, in storyline, screenplay and presentation. With all the star casts together under one banner, it was indeed an achievement of Paramount Pictures throwing a public appealing casting and a sensational plot that were enough to enthrall the audiences.
The most marvelous thing about The Godfather Part II, is this movie can be considered to be complementary to the original one with their story lines perfectly complimenting each other. Godfather II-The Movie, centers upon two parallel storylines, one dealing with the struggle of the new Don, Michael Corleone and the other narrating the prequel to the original theme, depicting the early life of Vito Corleone, in 1900s' America. Coppola's talent comes to play, when he blends the flavors of these two characters going through two different time lines in such a way that both uphold the original theme of the movie in front of the audience.
As young Vito Corleone rises into recognition from an inconspicuous immigrant in America to a dreaded Don, the movie parallelly reflects upon Michael, who slowly gets lost into the heinous dungeons of crime with the passage of time. The performances by Robert DeNiro, as young Vito and Al Pacino as Michael Corleone were so matured and expressive that they touched the audiences in a way as they had never done before.
As the theme shows its color and the plot stiffens up, the cool, calculating and ruthless Michael Corleone relates in some way to the soft spoken yet strikingly shrewd Vito Corleone. The plot quickens when Michael slowly gets entangled into the depths of crime vowing to put an end to the mob war and criminality in the future. Breaking up with his wife, Michael as portrayed in the film appears to be an unhappy man, who had compromised with all the misgivings of life and faced every devastating storm with valor. The film is almost unparalleled after the original movie Godfather, being the second best crime thriller of all time, as it portrays the similar kind of pain and commitment in the character of young Vito, played by the great actor Robert DeNiro.
