Saturday Night Fever

The Hollywood musical movie Saturday Night Fever is a popular 1977 movie starring John Travolta who plays the role of Tony Manero who is a troubled youth in Brooklyn as his weekend enjoyments mostly feature going to the local discotheque. The musical movie Saturday Night Fever enjoyed a major commercial success and at the same time this movie is credited with popularizing the genre of disco music worldwide other than making Travolta a popular face in Hollywood.

In fact the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, which featured the disco songs by the Bee Gees, tended to become the best selling soundtrack for a long time to come. This film is also known to have popularized the typical disco culture and era through the aspects of kind of outrageous music and dancing which is quite normal in present day scenario. The other aspects of the disco era which got prominently highlighted are melodies that are orchestrated by symphony, clothing style revealing the haute-couture culture, and representation of graceful choreography.

This story is mostly based on New York magazine article by Nik Cohn in 1976. The name of the article was “Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night”. The characters of the movie emerged from Cohn's imagination. In this movie Tony Manero played by John Travolta is stuck with a job without any scopes to prosper and the only source of entertainment and respite from his otherwise hopeless life is the local discotheque in Brooklyn named 2001 Odyssey. In this disco he's mostly seen with his 3 friends Joey (Joseph Cali); Double J (Paul Pape); and Bobby C. (Barry Miller).

Annette (Donna Pescow) is an unofficial member of this group and has strong feelings for Tony who recruits her for participating in a contest with him. Tony terminates their partnership after coming across a more talented girl named Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney). Stephanie's job as a secretary in a magazine office in Manhattan inspired Tony to change his job profile and his class.

This movie focuses on the happenings in the lives of the people around Tony including his family members and his friends. One of the factors focused very intricately is Tony's relation with his friends Double-J and Joey who are equally dare devils like him and love to take risks on a daily basis more often in the conditions of being drunk.

This movie also reveals a different side of Tony when he gives away the first prize that he and Stephanie had won in the contest to another couple whom he considered to be more deserving. In their rage of drunkenness things seem to go haywire with Tony and his friends leading to Bobby C's death. This is the time when Tony realizes that he needs to mend a lot of things in his life and he starts by mending his terms by Stephanie which had gone wrong after he tried to forcefully assault her.
