My Fair Lady

The Hollywood musical movie My Fair Lady is based on George Bernard Shaw's play namely Pygmalion. This Academy Award winning movie was released in 1964. This Hollywood musical was directed by George Cukor and features the stars like Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. The story of My Fair Lady revolves around Henry Higgins played by Rex Harrison and Eliza Doolittle played by Audrey Hepburn. Henry being a proud professor who teaches phonetics claims of his ability to teach any woman to speak and interact so perfectly in the society that he could easily introduce her as a duchess to those who boast of belonging to the high society.

Eliza Doolittle who sells flowers and has a strong English accent overheard Henry's statement and offered to pay for speech lessons, as that will help her get a job in a decent flower shop. Henry takes in Eliza as his student free of cost as a challenge to be able to prove his point. Eliza has to go through numerous types of speech trainings to master her skills to speak properly.

Initially Henry feels that its impossible to teach Eliza about speaking properly but due to regular practice and Henry's patience Eliza finally gets used to the methods of perfect speech and starts speaking in high society accent in an impeccable manner. Henry being adverse to the high society really appreciates Eliza's way of speaking in her typical Cockney accent in a high society party.

Henry finally succeeds in portraying Eliza as a member of the so called high society but his ignorance towards her future prospects leads her to leave him and go away and this is the time when Henry realizes to his horror that he has grown fond of her. To his surprise Henry is ruined to some extent as he spends his time the phonograph recordings of Eliza's voice lessons and at this moment of turmoil Eliza decides to come back to him.

In the stage play the role of Audrey Hepburn was played by Julie Andrews which earned her great critical acclaim. The favorite musical number and soundtracks in this movie feature the likes of Why Can't The English, Wouldn't It Be Lovely, With A Little Bit of Luck, Just You Wait, The Rain in Spain, I Could Have Danced All Night and On the Street Where You Live. Few of the other popular songs are I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face, Without You.



This movie won the best picture, best director, best actor, best music score, and best costume design awards. My Fair Lady also won the BAFTA Best Film Award. This movie being one of the best romantic musical movies of all times has portrayed the relation between two people perfectly enough to make the audience feel like being a part of the movie.
