One of the best musical films of all times, Mary Poppins is an American movie produced by the world famous Walt Disney. Mary Poppins was actually a series of children’s book by the famous woman author, P. L. Travers, which was originally illustrated by Mary Shepard. It was in the year 1938 that Walt Disney first attempted to talk with P. L. Travers to turn it into a film, but she was not sure whether an animated version would do justice to her book. Finally, in the year 1961 Walt Disney was successful in convincing Travers to turn Mary Poppins into a musical motion movie.
Starring Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, the nanny, Dick Van Dyke as Bert, Mary’s friend and jack of all trades, the role of the Banks children are played by Matthew Garber and Karen Dotrice and Mr. and Mrs. Banks played by Tomlinson and Glynis Johns. Said to be one of the best Musical Movies, the film is the winner of 5 Academy Awards out of the thirteen nominations that it received.
Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman gave the lyrics and music of Mary Poppins and the total planning of the whole script took two years to complete.

The movie is a mixture of wonderful animation, live actions, memorable and heart warming songs, making it a thoroughly entertaining movie for people of all ages. In a nut shell, one will feel like watching the movie again and again and still not get bored!
Rated as ‘U’ in the United Kingdom, ‘G’ in Australia and ‘G’ by the MPAA, even in the year 2006 Mary Poppins was ranked the number six on the American Film Institute's list of best musicals till date. The Disney Theatrical in the year 2004 produced a stage musical adaptation of the film in the West End at London. A Broadway production of the Mary Poppins was also released at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York in 2006, were it received great applauds and good reviews from the critics.

| Nominated for 7 Tony Awards, Mary Poppins won the title for the Best Scenic Design of a Musical. Though this new version kept most of the original music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, a couple of new songs were also added, which was written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Together with the Oscar-winning performance of the actors and all the contribution of the people behind the scene, Mary Poppins is still considered as one of the most highly rated musical movies of all times.
