The Mummy is a Hollywood film that was written and directed by Stephen Sommers. The film was released in the year 1999. What is striking about this horror movie is the use of the special effects. The plot of The Mummy revolves around a high priest, Imhotep of 1290 B.C. The role of Imhotep is played by actor Arnold Vosloo. Imhotep has an affair with the mistress of Pharaoh Seti I, Anck-su-namun played by Patricia Velasquez. When the pharaoh discovers this, Imhotep and Anck-su-namun assassinate the pharaoh. They are caught and Anck-su-namun kills herself so that she is resurrected by Imhotep. When Imhotep tries to resurrect Anck-su-namun, he is caught and remains unsuccessful in bringing her back. As punishment, he is placed under the curse of Hom Dai that is very painful. He is mummified alive and buried with the flesh eating bugs.
The curse of Hom Dai is painful but it also makes the person undergoing the curse immortal if released. The above is the background based on which the film begins after three thousand when Rick O'Connell played by Brendan Fraser lands up in Hamunaptra. He is later joined by Rachel Weisz who plays the role of Evelyn Carnahan. She is an aspiring Egyptologist and along with her brother Jonathan played by John Hannah goes with other Egyptologist in search of treasure. They get few treasures along with a book. The mummy of Imhotep is also discovered and when Evelyn accidentally reads out passages from the book, the mummy is awakened. After Imhotep is awakened, one can see amazing special effects that makes the supernatural actions of the mummy appear real.

The havoc wrecked by Imhotep makes it difficult for Rick and Evelyn and others to escape from him. However, when Evelyn reads a passage from the Book of Amon-Ra, the immortality of Imhotep is taken away. This helps Rick in killing the mummy. The film is typical of horror and thriller films where there is suddenness of actions and effective background score. The film was shot extensively in Morocco and Sahara Desert.
