The Exorcist starring Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow and Jason Miller is one of the famous horror movie released in 1973. The story of this movie was inspired by William Peter Blatty's novel The Exorcist published in 1971. The story of The Exorcist, which centers round a mother's attempt to free her daughter from the supernatural influence was the winner of two Academy award.
Plot of The Exorcist
The film opens with Father Lancaster's discovery of a stone head at an archaeological site. After a discussion with his companions Father visits another site where he discovers a statue whose head resembles that of the head which he found earlier. He also came across a mysterious man and two dogs engaged in fighting. On the other hand Father Damian Karras of Georgiana University was disturbed by his mother's prolong illness started doubting his own faith.
In the meantime, Chris ManNeil, the famous actress of Georgetown was worried with her 12 year old daughter, Regan ManNeil, who had undergone a sudden change in her behavior.
Chris, initially attributed these strange changes of her daughter to the trauma caused by her recent divorce. But the supernatural behavior exhibited by her daughter compelled Chris to visit the doctors who were baffled by Regan's behavior. A series of supernatural events followed after which Chris appeared before Father Karras, a priest and at the same time a psychriatist.
Father Merrin, who is also an achaeologist aided Father Karras in driving out the evil spirits. In course of events Father Merrin died. Damian tried his best to drive away the spirit of Devil and saved Regan. At the end of the story both the mother and daughter set on their journey towards Los Angeles.

Awards
The Exorcist won 2 awards in the 46th Annual Academy Award. The film was the winner of Academy Award for Sound and also best Writing Adapted Screenplay. Besides the film was nominated in the categories of best actress, best supporting actress, best supporting actor, best director, best picture, best art direction, best cinematography and best film editing. The Exorcist also won Saturn Award Best Horror Film. According to American Film Institute and Weekly Entertainment, the film was one of the best horror movies ever released.
