Poltergeist

Poltergeist was released on June 4, 1982. The movie was nominated for three Academy Awards. Poltergeist was co-produced and co-written by Steven Spielberg and was directed by Tobe Hooper. This film was Spielberg's first major success as a producer. It has often been referred as a cursed film because of the premature death of Heather O'Rourke and the murder of Dominique Dunne. According to JoBeth Williams, the skeletons used in the famous swimming pool scene were real. This film ranks in the position of 80 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

The plot of Poltergeist:
Poltergeist revolves around a home, which is located at a suburban area. The ghosts are shown to be communicating with a five year old girl named Carol Anne Freeling, played by Heather O'Rourke. At first, the ghosts provided few signs that they are already in the house. Daine, Carol Anne's mother is also convinced that the ghosts are there. She tries to convince her husband Steven about that.

Then during a terrible thunderstorm, the ghosts distract the family and take Carol Anne from her bedroom. The family does not find her and hears her through the television. Steven then reluctantly calls a group of parapsychologist. They were puzzled by what they saw. They explain the family elaborately about the difference between haunting and poltergeist over a coffee. They also assure them that what they are experiencing is poltergeist.

The spirits are of the opinion that Carol Anne is their salvation. Then some unnatural events occurred and the family is able to bring back Carol Anne.

Even though the spirits have moved on, the beast decides not to leave without Carol Anne. The beast personally comes after her. But the family manages to escape from th grasp of the beast by sheer luck and also by applying skill. The ongoing scenes show the exploding of coffins and bodies through the neighborhood. The whole family runs down the street into their car. The beast becomes angry and the house goes off and the neighbors are stunned by it. The film ends with the family checking into a Holiday Inn and they push the television set out of the room.

The other two movies of this series of Poltergeist are Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III. The 2nd film of the series was directed by Brian Gibson. The third film of the series was co-written, co-produced and directed by Gary Sherman.
