Haunting is a Hollywood horror/thriller film that was released in the year 1963. The director and producer of Haunting was Robert Wise and it is an adaptation from a novel by Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House. The screenplay of Haunting was by Nelson Gidding and there are minor changes in the film when compared to the novel. The film was released under the banner of MGM. This film tries to uncover the paranormal activities in a house. The star cast of Haunting is Richard Johnson, Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Valentine Dyall, Lois Maxwell, Rosalie Crutchley and Russ Tamblyn. There are slight changes made in the names of the characters from the novel.
In Haunting, Julie Harris is Eleanor, Russ Tamblyn is Luke, Richard Johnson is Dr. Markway, Valentine Dyall and Rosalie Crutchley are Mr and Mrs Dudley, Claire Bloom is Theodora and Lois Maxwell is Mrs Markway. The plot revolves around the search of paranormal by a team. Dr . John Markway investigates where there are any paranormal activities in the Hill House. Eleanor, Luke and Theodora who is known as Theo also accompany him. Markway is sure that Hill House has a sinister past due to which there are supernatural activities. He believes that the house will give him the proof that he requires.
Luke is the one who will inherit the house and is a bit skeptical of the doctor’s investigations. He volunteers to go to the house with others as an overseer. Dr. Markway then sends invitation to Eleanor and Theo as they had come in contact with supernatural activities previously. When they go into the house, they see that all the paranormal and supernatural activities centers around Eleanor. She gets more and more involved into the happenings of the house than others. It seems that Eleanor has special connections with what happened in the past in the house. In Haunting, the character of Eleanor is shown to be drawn by the forces that exist in the house.

Haunting was shot in England and the house shown is Ettington Hall. There were infrared shots used of the house to bring out the eerie effect. The film was also remade in the year 1999 which did not get much success. It is considered to be one of the scariest movies made in Hollywood. The eerie effect was also created by the help of the background score. The film has changes from the novel like Dr. Markway not telling Eleanor that he is married and in turn she thinks that he is interested in her.
