Gladiator

Gladiator is one of the very epic films of the year 2000, directed by Ridley Scott and produced by Douglas Wick, David Franzoni and Branko Lustig. The script of Gladiator was written by David Franzoni, John Logan and William Nicholson. The film was a huge success and won several awards and was also earned critical acclaim worldwide. In the film, Russell Crowe portrays the character of General Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is Emperor Marcus Aurelius’ friend. The different characters in Gladiator include Lucilla, Juba, Commodus, Proximo, Senator Gracchus, Hagen, Lucius Verus, Marcus Aurelius, Cicero, General Quintus, Gaius, Senator Falco and Tigris of Gaul. Gladiator is somewhat based on real life incidents related to the era of the Ancient Roman empire.

Plot Summary of Gladiator

On the unexpected demise of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, his most trusted General Maximus Meridas is held captive unlawfully. He is further fated to the gladiator games by Commodus who is the twisted son of Marcus. Commodus fears that Maximus may use his heroic standing to overthrow him and become the new emperor in his place. However Maximus achieves prominence as a gladiator and utilizes his celebrity status to further damage Commodus’ shaky hold on the vulnerable Roman people. Maximus hopes to inspire the Romans to revive their lost values and triumph over the corruption meted out to them.

In the 73rd Academy Awards ceremony, the film Gladiator won five awards under various categories. The film was also nominated for 36 individual ceremonies, which include the BAFTA Awards, 73rd Academy Awards, and the Golden Globe Awards. The various categories under which Gladiator won the various awards at the 73rd Academy Awards ceremony include Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, Best Actor (Russell Crowe), Best Costume Design and Best Sound. The movie also won several other awards including 4th Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards and many more.
