Frankenstein

Frankenstein was a horror/thriller movie that released in the year 1931. This Hollywood movie is based upon Frankenstein that was a novel by Mary Shelley. However there are many changes in the movie when compared to the book. Frankenstein was directed by James Whale and produced by Carl Laemmle. Jr under the banner of Universal Pictures. Actors of Frankenstein are Colin Clive, Dwight Frye, Mae Clarke, Boris Karloff and Edward Van Sloan. The editing of this horror film was done by Maurice Pivar and Clarence Kolster and the cinematography was done by Arthur Edeson. The make up artist of Frankenstein was Jack Pierce. Since the film is an adaptation of the novel, there are differences in the film and novel.

In the film Frankenstein, the role of Dr. Henry Frankenstein is played by Colin Clive and his assistant is Fritz played by Dwight Frye. Both of them create a monster with assembled body parts of various human bodies. The urge to create life became an obsession with the Dr. Frankenstein. He would try hard to create life from the body that had been created with assembled parts. He was successful in creating life by the help of various medical devices. Meanwhile the role of Dr. Frankenstein's fiancée was played by Mae Clarke who was very worried with her fiance's obsession and his peculiar behavior. She had no idea about what the young scientist was up to.

She goes with Dr. Waldman played by Edward Van Sloan and another friend in order to see Dr. Frankenstein. They all watch how Dr. Frankenstein creates the monster that is played by Boris Karloff. They had created a monster which would go on a rampage taking away lives. What Dr. Frankenstein does not realize is that the brain that has been put inside the monster is that of the criminal and so it goes on the rampage. Fritz is left strangled by the monster and it also manages to escape the dungeon. The strength of the monster was equal to 10 human beings. The wedding preparations are put on hold as the monster escapes and is waiting to kill Dr. Frankenstein.



In the end, Dr, Frankenstein is saved somehow from the monster and it is destroyed as the peasants set fire on the tower in which the monster has lodged itself bringing an end to the life created by Dr. Frankenstein. In the end, there are happy celebrations of the wedding of Dr. Frankenstein and Elizabeth. There were many sequels in the following years of the film Frankenstein. Sequels to Frankenstein were Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein. There have been various other remakes of Frankenstein made later under various names.
