Black Sunday

Black Sunday is a 1960 horror movie, which was directed by Mario Bava, and the screenplay was done by Ennio de Concini and Mario Serandrei. It is an Italian film, which is based loosely on the short story ‘Viy’, written by Nikolai Gogol. Black Sunday was regarded to be oddly dreadful by the standards of early 1960s and was banned in the United Kingdom up until the year1968 owing to its violent content. The movie was produced by Massimo de Rita and written by Ennio de Concini and Mario Serandrei. In the United States Black Sunday was released in 1961 and in Italy the movie was released in 1960.

The lead star in Black Sunday includes Barbara Steele, Arturo Dominici, John Richardson and Ivo Garran among others. Barbara Steele played the character of Katia Vajda/Princess Asa Vajda. John Richardson plays the part of Dr. Andre Gorobec and Arturo Dominici plays Igor Javuto in Black Sunday. Ivo Garran plays the character of Prince Vajda. The other actors playing various roles in this horror film include Andrea Checchi, Enrico Olivieri, Antonio Pierfederici, Tino Bianchi, Renato Terra, Clara Bindi and Mario Passante.

Plot Summary of Black Sunday

The story of the film Black Sunday concerns a vampire who killed by her own brother and then returns after 200 years to feed off of her descendants. A vengeful witch and her evil servant arrive from their grave and start a bloody crusade to seize the body of a beautiful look-alike descendant. However a handsome doctor and the girl’s brother stand in her way. In the United States, some of the movie’s more gruesome moments were censored previous to its theatrical release, by the American International Pictures. For those who enjoy real horror, they will surely find Black Sunday a great movie to watch.

Regardless of the minor censorship problems faced by Black Sunday, it received huge box office success and was critically acclaimed worldwide. In the year 2004, one of the sequels to Black Sunday was voted by the Bravo Channel at number 40 among the 100 most Scariest Movie Moments. The film was Mario Bava’s directorial debut, which helped him in achieving immense success as a director. After the immense success of Black Sunday many critics recognized Bava as a prospective master of the horror genre.
