Born Yesterday

A sweeping hit in the genre of romantic comedies, Born Yesterday has been made twice in the history of Hollywood so far. While the first version of the movie is an original screenplay released in the year 1950, the remake of Born Yesterday, is a much recent one, released in the year 1993. It is significant, that the source for the movies is the play having the same name, and was written by Garson Kanin. While the original film of 1950 had earned several accolades for its presentation and cinematography, including the Academy Awards for the Best Actress, the remake of Born Yesterday, released in the year 1993 could never etch a mark in the minds of the cinema lovers. In fact, the movie did not receive much critical acclaim, for either it's performance or screenplay.

Both the movies have the same story line, with slight or no changes. The film is based mainly in the city of Washington, DC and revolves around the life of a corrupt tycoon and his mistress. The story commences with the travel of Harry Brock and his beloved mistress to the capital city of Washington. The mistress whose name is Emma 'Billie' Dawn is very naive and lacks the sophisticated touch. Disgusted with her brazen behavior, her uncouth lover decides to give her some worthy training.

The comic farce of the film lies in the fact that, her lover who is ashamed of her attitude, is himself an uncouth brute himself. His accomplice, Jim Devery who is his crooked lawyer also accompanies them in the tour to bribe two influential politicians.

In the course of her emancipation, Billie comes in touch with her tutor Paul Verrall, who is hired by her lover. As Billie is taught sophisticated manners, she emerges much smarter than anticipated by the corrupt tycoon. She gains true emancipation, since she learns to think on her own, and have her own space. The twist comes when the two fall in love. In the meantime, Devery coaxes Harry to sign many of his assets, to hide them from government. With Billie's new found freedom, she rises against Harry, to spend the rest of her life with Verrall.

Starcast of Born Yesterday(1953): The cast of the older version has Judy Holliday, Broderick Crawford, William Holden as the leading actors.

Starcast of Born Yesterday(1990): Melanie Griffith, John Goodman and Don Johnson are in the chief characters of this movie.
