Operation Petticoat

Operation Petticoat is one of the Hollywood comedy movies that gained popularity as one of the Hollywood classic movies. Operation Petticoat was released in 1959; it was directed by Blake Edwards. The main stars who showed their excellent performance in Operation Petticoat were Dina Merrill, Tony Curtis and Cary Grant.

Story of Operation Petticoat:

Operation Petticoat tells you about the crazy adventure of a skipper and a crew of an American submarine called USS Sea Tiger. The story of the film begins with the fictional setting of World War II. The submarine sunk in the islands of Philippine at the time of World War II. Grant, the skipper of the submarine along with Curtis, his crew wanted to continue their voyage. They wanted to take part in the war. To repair and equip the submarine they sail on to their way to Australia.

The voyage of Grant and Curtis included several detours like meeting a group of people and stopping over for painting their ship; in the detour they meet a group of marooned Army nurse. Grant and Curtis wanted to repaint the submarine with the color pink irrespective of the fact that apart from red or white no color was available at that time.

Historical basis of Operation Petticoat

Although the movie has enough fictional aspects yet there are some historical facts related to the movie. The scenes of World War II and the sinking of the submarine are based on real life.
Coloring of submarine with pink is also based on the letter of lieutenant commander James Wiggin Coe who was in charge of the submarine ‘Skipjack’ that sunk during the Second World War. He wanted to paint the submarine with pink as there was lack of white lead or red lead undercoat paint.

The film was produced by Robert Arthur and written by Maurice Richlin, Stanley J. Shapiro, Joseph J. Stone and Paul King. Russel Harlan had shown his skill of cinematography while Henry Mancini and David Rose contributed for music in Operation Petticoat.

The film, Operation Petticoat was so popular that it was adapted as a television series. ABC TV made TV series of the film. Television series of Operation Petticoat was on air from 1977 to 1979.
