Frank Capra was the director of It Happened One Night, which was released on 22nd February, 1934. It has been recognized as one of the most popular Hollywood movies. In addition, it has also been selected by the Library of Congress for being one of the most ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’ films of all times.
Plot of It Happened One Night
This is a beautiful romantic comedy revolving around the two main characters of the movie, Ellie Andrews and Peter Warne. Ellie Andrews is a spoilt heiress; whereas, Peter Warne is a mere newspaper reporter. They encounter each other when Ellie has run away from her home and is one her way to New York to meet her husband, Westley.
Peter promises to help her reunite with Westley and in reward he wanted the story of her escape for an article. The story of these two characters begins after Ellie agrees to the deal. During the journey they both fall in love each other; however, they do not express their feelings.
Due to a misunderstanding Ellie suspects Peter and leaves him. She returns back to her father, who in the mean time has changed him mind and is ready for her formal wedding with Westley.
In the climax of the movie Ellie’s father understands the feeling shared between her daughter and Peter; he encourages her to go back to the person whom she actually loves. It Happened One Night ends with a beautiful note, with the couple finding their true love.
Cast of It Happened One Night
The principal characters of It Happened One Night are Clark Gable as Peter Warne, Claudette Colbert as Ellie Andrews, Walter Connolly as Alexander Andrews and Jameson Thomas as ‘King’ Westley. Other supporting characters were Charles C. Wilson, Roscoe Karns, Alan Hale, Blanche Friderici and Arthur Hoyt.

Awards Won by It Happened One Night
It was one of the first romantic comedies of that time and first movies to win all five prime Academy Awards. The categories in which It Happened One Night won awards were Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Writing, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Director.
Apart from awards, it was also appreciated by the audience. Later in the year 1956, It Happened One Night was remade as a musical comedy with the title You Can’t Run Away from it.
