The Awful Truth

Leo McCarey, the director and producer of The Awful Truth, made this 1937’s romantic comedy a blockbuster of all times. The Awful Truth was one of the most popular Hollywood movies of those times, which was highly appreciated by the audiences. This 90 minutes movie became a part of the series of ‘comedies of remarriage’. This name was addressed by the great philosopher Stanley Cavell.

Plot of The Awful Truth

This movie was made out of one of the most common characteristics of human beings, which is ‘Suspicion’. A small suspicion resulted in the divorce of the main cast of the film, Jerry Warriner and Lucy. However, even after their divorce they feel the love for each other. All through the movie the audiences are made to come across a number of misunderstanding and suspicion.

In several sequences the leading actor and actress of The Awful Truth are shown making a fool of themselves through their acts. Every time both try to reconcile to each other some misconception arises and things again go to vain. It is only in the end that Jerry and Lucy laugh at their own enactments and reconcile for their mistakes.

Versions of The Awful Truth

It was actually the remake of the earlier versions of the original play. One was released in 1925 (silent version) and the other in 1929 (early-talkie). If seen chronologically, then the 1937’s The Awful Truth was the third version of the play. Again in the year 1953 a version of The Awful Truth came out with the title Let’s Do It Again. In this movie Jane Wyman and Ray Miland were the leading stars.

Cast of The Awful Truth

There were a huge number of star cast in this movie. In the leading roles were Cary Grant as Jerry Warriner and Irene Dunne as Lucy Warriner. Ralph Bellamy, Alexander D’Arcy, Cecil Cunningham, and Molly Lamont are some of the other members of the cast.

Awards won by The Awful Truth

Leo McCarey won the Academy Award for his top notch direction. Apart from this award, it was also nominated for several other categories such as Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. In addition to all these acclamations The Awful Truth was also selected by National Film Registry as one of the best ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’ films.
