The original story of Pinocchio, written by Carlo Collodi and known to almost all the kids throughout the world, was the prime pick for producing two cinematic versions, one in the United States of America and the other in Italy. The American animated version is still an all time favorite, produced by the legendary father of animation, Walt Disney in 1940. The Disney production wonderfully upholds the theme of this well popular tale with the septogenarian Gepetto who aspired for a boy. Looking for an outlet to make way to this boundless fatherly love, Gepetto carves out the silhouette of a boy from wood and named him Pinocchio.
The Animation in Pinocchio (1940) well portrays the story of the little wooden boy, who falls from grace due to the spell of the evil magician at the circus. After several ups and downs in the wrong situations, Pinocchio manages to take heed to his conscience and blessed with the touch of real life. The animated version of this simple story is not only a masterpiece as far as the moral is concerned, it is also an all time achievement that certainly conveys the pleasures, pain and expectations of a common little boy who slowly attains the realization of rightness deep within. The voice casting in Pinocchio- the movie, is perfect with star performances by the vocal maestros, like: Christian Rub as Gepetto, Evelyn Venable as the Blue Fairy, Walter Catlett as Honest John and Dickie Jones as the voice of Pinocchio.
The most fascinating thing about Pinocchio by Disney, is the portrayal of the surrealistic character, called Jiminy Cricket, as the conscience of the boy. It is Jiminy to whom he confides to all throughout the movie and ultimately surrenders to the truth winning the grace of the Fairy's blessing. The voice performances of Cliff Edwards as Jiminy and Dickie Jones as Pinocchio maintained such a parity in mood and expression that this animated version became an all time hit. Disney's Pinocchio ran for nominations that ultimately brought it 2 Oscar awards. One was awarded for the best musical performances with the song “When You Wish Upon a Star” topping the hit list and the other was granted for the best lyrics ever written.
