Finding Neverland

Released in the year 2004, Finding Neverland is an Academy Award-winning film. The cast of the movie includes Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet and this is a movie for the children specially. It is a semi-fictional account of the experiences of J. M. Barrie and his friendship with Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and her sons. Finding Neverland is one such movie, which has not only attracted children but has also impressed adults.

The story of Finding Neverland is very interesting. J. M. Barrie played by Johnny Depp is a successful novelist and playwright. He meets Sylvia Llewelyn Davies played by Kate Winslett. She is a young widow with several young sons and a friendship develops between them.

J.M. Barrie proves to be a great friend for Sylvia's boys and their small acts gives him ideas, which he introduces into a play about boys. The boys do not want to grow up. As a result Barrie begins spending more time with them to give them company and teach them lessons in life. In this process he starts neglecting his wife Mary played by Radha Mitchell. Later on she divorces him.

Though Sylvia cherishes the company of Barry, her mother Emma du Maurier played by Julie Christie is not pleased with him and his involvement with the family.

The film, Finding Neverland, ends in a sad note. J. M. Barry makes a film out of his novel with the help of the producer Charles Frohman played by Dustin Hoffman. The play is a huge success. Meanwhile Sylvia falls ill and is unable to see the play so Barrie performs the play for her at home before she dies.

Marc Forster who earlier directed Monster’s Ball has also directed finding Neverland. The screenplay was adapted from The Man Who Was Peter Pan by Allan Knee by David Magee. The film also has a song written by Elton John. The film was scheduled for release in the end of 2003, but later on due to some issues the release of Finding Neverland was delayed by one year.

It is interesting to note that the original screenplay of Finding Neverland included a scene in which producer Charles Frohman was to put on the Hook costume and read some lines to point out how silly and irrelevant he found it. Hoffman objected to this, so the scene was rewritten for him. In the rewritten scene, he had to read aloud and ridicule character names from the play. Freddie Highmore who played Peter in this movie, received lot of accolades for his performance and became popular after the movie.
