Released in 1998, the Mask of Zoro is a moving romantic comedy that cuts across various cinematic genres and proves itself one of the best Hollywood films. The theme of the film incorporates Mexico's fight for independence. It stars Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Stuart Wilson and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The star-studded casting compliments the plot perfectly well. The film is directed by Martin Campbell.
Plot of the Mask of Zoro
Mask of Zoro tells an epic tale of defending love and honor in times of struggle. The opening dates back to 1821, showing Mexico on the threshold of independence from the oppressive clutches of the Spanish colonial rulers. It's been twenty years since Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) fought against the legendary hero, Zoro and now its time for him to find an heir to the dismantled ruler. He chooses Alejandro Murietta (Antonio Banderas) as the successor to the throne. But the problem with Murietta is his disturbed past. Entrusting a bandit with the responsibility to fight against the oppressors is not very assuring. Once the decision has been taken to promote Murietta as the successor to the throne, Don Diego de la Vega has to incite the urge in him to fight bravely and fearlessly. The newly crowned Zoro Tornado must prevent the autocratic ruler Raphael Montero from capturing the entire city of California and putting its residents to slavery in his mines.
The new Zoro prepares to fight Raphael with whip, sword, mask and stallions. The art of warfare depicted in the Mask of Zoro is characterized by an epic grandeur.
Note that even though Antonio Banderas plays the role of a Mexican-born Californian in the film, he was the first Spanish actor ever to impersonate Zoro. It was Anthony Hopkins himself who portrayed the original Zoro.
Famous Scene in the Mask of Zoro
A particular kissing scene in the Mask of Zoro has been discussed time and again as one of the most sensually pleasing movie scenes in the 1990s. This scene involves the disrobing of Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones) by the sword of Alejandro followed by a passionate kiss.
