Based on the epic novel penned down by J. R. R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings trilogy is made of three action-packed fantasy films: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Starting from 2001, these three films were released in successive years. The trilogy is particularly noted for its use of special effects. There are 2730 visual effect shots in total in this trilogy and 260 artists were employed to carry out the mammoth project.
The plot of The Lord of the Rings trilogy is quite fascinating. The events in the film do not get overshadowed by the fantasy elements. New Zealand was the main filming location. The cast and crew spent months together in this picturesque island which is characterized by a touch gloomy, old-world aura. The surroundings played a significant role in creating the epic grandeur of all the three films.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy features a long line of casting, including Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Bean, Dominic Monaghan, Christopher Lee, David Wenham, Orlando Bloom and many other leading actors. It was directed by Peter Jackson who derived the concept from a much earlier version of The Lord of the Rings, released in 1978. This film, however, raised some confusion and doubt in the mind of Jackson.
Once he went through the epic novel, he couldn't resist the temptation to go and watch a film based on the novel. It took a long time for Jackson to materialize his dreams. The making of The Lord of the Rings is regarded as one of the most illustrious of cinematic attainments for Peter Jackson. The successful implementation of computer generated imagery in Hollywood films such as Jurassic Park encouraged Jackson to consider making a film out of the novel.
Peter Jackson knew it very well that the epic content was to be dealt in a balanced way, without getting too flashy or too mundane. The challenging task was eventually taken up and the first film of the sequel finally hit the theaters in 2001.
