Regarded as one of the best Action/Sci Fi movies ever, the movie, Independence Day deals with an attempted alien attack on Earth. The film was directed by Roland Emmerich and was set to release on July 3, 1996, a day before America's Independence Day. A huge sum of money went into the pre-release marketing and promotion of the film. Quite interestingly, the film hit the theaters in the United States of America on July 2, 1996, allowing for a deliberate coincidence with the reel and the real. The date of release conformed to the events shown in the film. Upon international release, the total gross amounted to $816,969,268, the 18th highest in the history of movies.
Independence Day is specially noted for its bedazzling use of computer special effects. The alien invasion of earth is portrayed vividly with the help of modern cinematic techniques. The naming of the film is done purposefully to hint at the power of togetherness, especially in time of extreme opposition and difficulties. The fact that the entire world gets united to fight off the alien invaders speaks for the central message the film wants to convey.

Numerous smaller spacecrafts, released from the giant ship, position themselves over the major cities around the world. Scientist David Levinson deciphers the transmissions emitted from the smaller spacecrafts and warns the US president about a potential alien attack on Earth. He sensed that the giant ship is fitted out with a timer and the countdown of attack has already begun, posing the threat of utter annihilation of human civilization. The US authority issues a notice to vacate the probable target cities. Accompanied by David, the president himself takes shelter in the White House. As soon as the countdown reaches zero, all the smaller spacecrafts start firing at the targeted areas with advanced weapons, reducing the cities to debris.

| Scientists need to figure out some means to stop the debacle. They come to know that the giant ship is impenetrable due to the presence of a strong force field around it. David Levinson contrives a plan to blow the mother spaceship to pieces by causing a nuclear explosion in its core. To put this plan into practice, David and Captain Steven Hiller embark on a voyage that none has dared to take up before. They assume the role of saviors of life on earth. David successfully plants the nuclear weapon while Captain Hiller pilots the fighter jet to safety. A startling explosion obliterates the mother spacecraft completely, altering the fate of life on earth.
