The enemy gets picked up and is dumped by a smokestack. The survival status remains unknown. The film proper then turns its focus to the recovery of the very important Automatic Targeting and Attack Communicator (ATAC) device. This device is lost in the Ionian Sea after the British spy ship St. Georges gets sunk by an old mine. The ATAC system is used by the Ministry of Defense in order to initiate communication and co-ordinate the Royal Navy's fleet of Polaris submarines. The film, For Your Eyes Only then shows the possible retrieval of ATAC underwater by another superpower, the ballistic missiles of the submarines which are nothing but major potential threat for most of the western cities. The story continues with exciting scenes making the film progress swiftly.

For Your Eyes Only marked an artistic change of direction for the series of Bond film. It was in this film that John Glen got promoted as he became a film director from a film editor. He managed to hold to his position throughout the 1980s. As a consequence, this paved way for a harder-edged administrative approach, with less importance on the use of gadgets.
