Christopher Reeve

One of the most popular Hollywood male actors of all times - Christopher D'Olier Reeve was better known as Superman. This American actor who lived from September 25, 1952 to October 10, 2004 was an American actor who was also an eminent writer, director and producer. Hollywood actor Christopher Reeve was trained in Juilliard before he started shooting for the movie Superman. In the 1980s, Christopher Reeve starred in several movies like Deathtrap, Somewhere in Time, Street Smart and The Bostonians.

He also acted in many plays. Some of his prominent roles were in the Broadway plays like Fifth of July and The Marriage of Figaro. In 1987, he played a major role in a public rally for supporting the 77 Chilean actors, playwrights and directors- all of who were ordered death sentence by Dictator Augusto Pinochet. This was for criticism of his regime. Later the sentence was cancelled by Pinochet and Reeve was honored with as many as three national distinctions from Chile. Christopher Reeve, in 1990s, acted in movies like Noises Off, Village of the Damned and The Remains of the Day.
In 1992 he had tied the knot with Dana Morosini and had a son, Will. Before his marriage to Dana Morosini, he had two other children Matthew and Alexandra with Gae Exton. In 2006, Dana Reeve expired due to lung cancer. For his role in the film Superman, he was under intensive training by David Prowse, the famous weightlifting champion. His fitness regime consisted of running, weightlifting and on the trampoline for 90 minutes. He had to double his food intake with a rich protein diet.

For his performance in the movie, Christopher Reeve got very positive reviews from the critics. In the year 1979, he was the coach of the Special Olympics, besides O.J. Simpson.


Reeve’s performance in the movies like Deathtrap and The Bostonians are memorable. He was also a licensed pilot and also flew across the Atlantic twice, alone. In 2003 and 2004, Christopher Reeve was suffering from several serious infections. Soon he died. Matthew and Alexandra, his children are the present board of directors at the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

In the year 1995, Christopher Reeve had an accident in an equestrian competition and was paralyzed. Since then he was wheelchair ridden for his entire life. He campaigned for patients suffering from spinal cord injuries and for research on human embryonic stem cell. He was also the founder of Christopher Reeve Foundation. He was the co-founder of Reeve-Irvine Research Center. On October 10, 2004, he expired due to cardiac arrest. He was just 52 then.
