Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins CBE is a well known Male Hollywood actor born in the year 31st December, 1937. An Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning film, stage and television actor, Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins is well renowned by all his costars of his time and even today for his dedication and hard work as one of the most Popular Hollywood Male Actors. Nicknamed as ‘Tony’ in the film industry, he was born in Margam, Port Talbot in Wales to Muriel Anne and Richard Arthur Hopkins.

Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins’s early life as a school boy was unproductive. He was a loner with dyslexia, and thus he found that he would rather immerse himself in art, such as painting and drawing or playing the piano, than attend to his studies. Send away to school by his parents to instill some discipline, Anthony Hopkins was influenced and encouraged to become an actor by Richard Burton, a Welsh actor, whom he met briefly at the age of 15. After that he enrolled at the College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, from which he graduated in the year 1957. Two years later he moved to London where he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) at the suggestion of Roy Marsden, a British actor.
Several years later after performing and honing his craft in repertory, he was spotted by Sir Laurence Olivier, who invited him to join the National Theatre in the year 1965. Anthony Hopkins was given the opportunity to be Olivier's understudy, and got his chance to shine from there on. In spite of his success at the National, Hopkins was getting tired of performing the same roles nightly and yearned to be in movies. In the year 1968, Anthony Hopkins got his big break in ‘The Lion in Winter’, playing Richard I, along with future James Bond star Timothy Dalton, who played Philip II of France.

Since then, Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins has gone on to enjoy a long career, winning many Academy Awards in Hollywood.


In the year 1973, he won the BAFTA Best Actor award for his performance as Pierre Bezukhov in the BBC's production of ‘War and Peace’. After that in the year 1987, Anthony Hopkins was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE), and a Knight Bachelor in 1993 and was also awarded an honorary fellowship from the University of Wales, Lampeter. Anthony Hopkins’s role in the film ‘The World's Fastest Indian’ were he portrayed Burt Munro is one of the favorite in his entire career. Hopkins had also directed few films of his own. In 2006, Anthony Hopkins was the receiver of the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.
