Born on April 15, 1959 in Paddington, London, Emma Thompson is a noted English actress, comedian as well as screenwriter. The Early Days
Born in England, Emma Thompson is the daughter of Eric Thompson, noted actor who became popular for narrating the English version of the French children's series The Magic Roundabout, and Phyllida Law, a Scottish actress. Emma spent a good part of her life in Scotland and has a huge influence of the nation on her. Since her childhood days, Emma Thompson started showing her acting talent. She attended Camden School for Girls and then joined Newnham College in Cambridge to study English. She was also a member and vice-president of the theatrical club of the University, the Footlights. She won a contract from Richard Armitage, whom she impressed with her acting talent, even much before she completed her graduation. Soon after completing her graduation in 1982, Emma Thompson came to the limelight with the leading role in the West End revival of the musical Me and My Girl. Soon followed the BBC serial drama, Fortunes of War.
The Career
Emma Thompson delivered a number of hit movies throughout her career. Though she started early in her career with various small roles, the first major role that she got was the romantic comedy, The Tall Guy. But in the following years, she acted in a series of films that made her career to take a serious turn. Howards End was such a film which earned fame as well as critic's recognition for her. At the same time, the film also gave her Oscar for Best Actress. This film took her career into a new height. Here, one must mention the names of the films like In the Name of the Father, The Remains of the Day, Carrington etc. Emma Thompson once again delivered a classic performance in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility in 1996.
