Audrey Hepburn was one of the most phenomenal personalities who has ever marked her presence in the glittering world of Hollywood. Born on 4th May, 1929, this Anglo-Dutch actress was the winner of a Tony Award and Academy Award. She was not only a fine actress, but also an icon of fashion and a great humanitarian. In the year 1999, six years after her death, she was honored by the American Film Institute as the “third greatest female star of all time”. She made a remarkable contribution as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and for her consistent efforts she was rewarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Early Life of Audrey Hepburn
She was born as Audrey Kathleen Ruston in the country of Belgium. Her parents were Joseph Victor Anthony Ruston, an Englishman, and once Baroness Ella van Heemstra, a Dutch. She belonged to a very royal household and descended from England's King Edward III. She was also a distant relative of the Princess of Wales, Diana. Her early schooling was in a boarding school in Kent. Though she was abandoned by her father after her parents divorced, she took care of him till his death. She was involved in the collection of money for Dutch resistance as Germany invaded Holland. She became an expert ballerina by the year 1944.
After the Second World War, she went to Amsterdam received ballet lessons along with Sonia Gaskell. She took lessons in dancing with the famous Marie Rambert in the year 1948. Her fragile physic was a hindrance in becoming a prima ballerina, and on the advice of Marie Rambert, she started pursuing acting as a career.

She started her career in acting by appearing in Dutch in Seven Lessons, an educational film. She played in musical theater productions too. Her first role was that of a receptionist of a hotel in One Wild Oat, a British film. She played small roles in films like Laughter in Paradise, Young Wives' Tale, Monte Carlo Baby and The Lavender Hill Mob. In 1951, she successfully acted in the Gigi, at the Fulton Theatre. |
