Wong Kar Wai

Popularly known as a Hong Kong director, Wong Kar Wai is a reputed Hollywood director. The innovative style of his films has earned him a reputation of one of the top directors of Hollywood.

Background

Born on July 17th 1958, Wong Kar Wai, moved to the city of Hong Kong at the age of five. Initially from Shanghai, the dialect proved to be one of the major difficulties for him. Being used to Mandarin and Shanghainese dialects the Cantonese style was alien to him. He used to spend a lot of time at movie theaters to grasp the language. He went on to graduate in graphic design from the Hong Kong Polytechnic College in 1980.

After this, he took admission into the Production Training Course that was held by the Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB). He became a television scriptwriter eventually. Some years later, he had his first brush with direction at the Wing Scope Co. and In-gear Film Production Company. The latter production house was owned by veteran director Alan Tang Kwong – Wing. He later funded Wong Kar Wai's debut directorial venture, As Tears Go By in 1988.
Career

Wong Kar Wai shaped up with the Days of Being Wild in 1990. After this he scripted and directed many films some of which are listed below:
  • Chung Hing sam Iam (1994) – this was released in USA, Europe and Hong Kong.
  • Dung che sai duk in 1994
  • Duo luo tian shi (1995)
  • Chun gwong cha sit in 1997
  • Hua yang de nian hua (2000)
  • Fa yeung nin wa (2000)
The Follow and Six Days released in consecutive years. This was followed by 2046 and Eros in 2004, two years after the release of Six Days.


In 2007 two films by Wong Kar Wai released - “My Blueberry Nights” and “ Chacun son cinema ou Ce petit coup au coeur guand la lumiere s eteint et que le film commence”. The Lady from Shanghai is slated to be released in 2009.

Accolades

Director, screenwriter, producer are the various areas that has been experimented by Wong Kar Wai. He has been awarded for his excellent work on various occasions. Altogether, the director won thrice the award for Best Director—once at the Cannes Film Festival and twice at the Hong Kong Film Awards. ‘Days of Being Wild’ and ‘Chungking Express’ at the latter awards and for Happy Together at the Cannes Film Festival. ‘In the Mood for Love’ has won him the award of Screen International at the 2000 European Film Awards.
