Takeshi Kitano

Takeshi Kitano is one of the great film directors in the world. For his excellence as author, poet, painter, presenter, film editor and film director, Takeshi Kitano has gained worldwide appreciation. He is the foremost media personality of Japan and has a great contribution in the film industry.

Takeshi Kitano was born on 18 January in the year 1947 in Tokyo, Japan. He learned singing, dancing and comedy, from Senzaburô Fukami, the famed comedian. This famous film director has been a professor at the Graduate School of Visual Arts, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, since 2005.

Takeshi Kitano is the owner of a film company. In the year 2000, this film company launched Tokyo Filmex. The films of Takeshi Kitano are based on the stories about Yakuza gangsters or the police. This famous film director likes to use long takes in his movies. His films, which convey a drab or nihilistic philosophy, are also packed with a great deal of humor.
The films of Takeshi Kitano though initially considered as dark comedies or gangster movies, bear a moral question as well. His films, instead of leaving certain controversial impressions, invoke an individual to think. The people of Japan know Takeshi Kitano primarily as a TV host and a comedian. The international fame of this film director is continuously rising. The weekly television program called Beat Takeshi's TV Tackle is hosted by Takeshi himself.

He is considered as one of the reputed film directors. Takeshi Kitano acted in a number of films throughout the early '80s. In 1989, Kitano started his career as a serious film director. The first film directed by Kitano was the ‘Violent Cop’, which brought him international recognition as a film director.


Some of the masterpieces on crime made by Takeshi Kitano include Boiling Point (1990), Sonatine (1993), and Hana-bi. Hana-bi won the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion Award in 1997. Besides crime movies, Takeshi directed certain other kinds of movies, which were equally acclaimed.

His ‘Scene By the Sea’, which is a light drama about a deaf-mute garbage collector who learns to surf. The slapstick comedy satirizing Japanese culture and ‘Kids Return’, a tale about two high school dropouts have received great international appreciation. On August 2, 1994, Takeshi Kitano faced a nearly fatal accident, which almost ended his career as a director. After recovery, he played a small role in Gonin by Takashi Ishii.

Many of the films of Takeshi Kitano have received critical appreciation from international field. The release of ‘Brother’, the first international co-production brought a great Hollywood success for Kitano.
