Beginning of career
Robert Wise had an early start to his movie career in Hollywood. He began his stint with the world of American cinema as a sound and music editor. In the year 1941, the director won the Academy Award for best film editing for the movie Citizen Kane. It was with this particular movie that Robert Wise began to be noticed in Hollywood.
The first directorial stint that Robert Wise had was for the movie 'The Magnificent Ambersons', were he served in the capacity of an assistant director. But a full fledged directorial role happened with the movie The Curse of the Cat in the year 1944. That movie was an important directorial debut for Robert who went on to make some horror movies for RKO, The Body Snatcher being one of them.

His penchant for including some brilliant special effects in movies was noticeable in the movie Citizen Kane. The passion for special effects made him create some of the brilliant science fiction movies of Hollywood. He was one of the early proponents as far as making science fiction movies were concerned.
After the success of the movie Citizen Kane, director Robert Wise went on to make movies like, The Day the Earth Stood Still, West Side Story and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. All these movies boasted of some excellent special effects.

Robert Wise got nominated for the best director award at the Oscars for the first time for his movie, I Want to Live. He won the first Academy Award for best direction for his movie West Side Story. One of the scariest Hollywood movies, The Haunting, was also directed by Robert Wise. The Sound of Music movie also won him the Academy Award for best direction.
Some of Robert Wise movies made during the 1970s included the likes of The Andromeda Strain, The Hindenburg and Audrey Rose. The movie Rooftops, was his last Hollywood movie as a director. On the 14th of September, 2005 the director suffered a massive heart attack that led to his death. He left behind a legacy that continues to inspire and motivate the modern day directors in Hollywood.
