Lynne Ramsay

Born in 1969 Lynne Ramsay has evolved into one of the top film directors in Hollywood. She has carved out a niche for herself in the film industry and many of her works are applauded for the sheer excellence of the plot.

Lynne Ramsay took up photography in Napier College, Edinburgh. After this, she joined the National Film and Television School, where she majored in direction and cinematography. ‘Small Deaths’ was her graduation project that went on to win the Prix du Jury Award at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival.

In 1997, she directed two short films – Kill The Day and Gunsmen. Both these films were acclaimed and well received. As one of the youngest directors at Hollywood, Lynne Ramsay soon made a mark for herself. She was one of the promising new directors in the industry.

In 1999, Lynne Ramsay made Ratcatcher, which was a dark drama set in 1970. In 1973, Glasgow went through a garbage workers strike that created mayhem in the city. ‘Ratcatcher’ is based on this dark period and the story is narrated through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy. The sudden death of a friend finds this boy in a tricky and confusing situation.
The story begins with the death and follows the expeditions of James Gillespie post the incident. The cruelty of the world combined with the innocence of childhood giving way to adolescence, is poignantly depicted in the movie. This movie won Lynne Ramsay the 2000 BAFTA Carl Foreman Award for the débutante in British Films.

Ramsay's next venture was an adaptation of Alan Werner's book. ‘Morvern Callar’ is a thriller drama that follows the life of a supermarket worker after her boyfriend's death. The depiction of the storyline through minimal narration is what captures the audience.

Innocence once again has been carefully woven with the cruelties of life. Lynne Ramsay's photographic expertise is brought out through the silent frames that capture each emotion and incident vividly.

The protagonist's relation with the surroundings and her reactions to situations forms the main focus of the film.

Some of the movies directed by Lynne Ramsay are:
  • Cinema 16: British Short Films (2003)
  • Gasman (1997)
  • Small Deaths (1996)
  • Kills the Day (1996)
  • Ratcatcher (1999)
As a cinematographer, Ramsay has done brilliant work on Small Deaths, Sweet Heart (1996) and One Eye (1997).
