Hayao Miyazaki is one of the prominent directors in Hollywood. The captivating storyline combined with the characters and animated series have lured many audiences. His forte lies in creating animated feature films that has earned him acclaim throughout the world. In 1997, he became a global name with the release of ‘Princess Mononoke’.
Background
Born in Akebono – Cho, Tokyo on January 1941, Hayao Miyazaki was the second son of Katsuji. Katsuji was the director of Miyazaki Airplanes. The company was involved in the manufacturing of rudders for fighter lanes. Miyazaki attended Toyotoma High School and it was there that his interest for animation grew. He went on to graduate in political science and economics from Gakushuin University. He procured a job with Toei Animation and worked as an artist in Watchdog Bow Wow. He married Akemi Ota in 1965, who was also an animator.
Works of Hayao Miyazaki
While working at Toei Animation, Hayao Miyazaki gained popularity when he altered the climax of “Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon”. In 1968, he played an important part in ‘Hols: Prince of the Sun’. This was a film by veteran director Isao Takahata. He provided animation and ideas in the 1969 animated feature film ‘Puss in Boots’.
Later on in the film ‘Flying Phantom Ship’, he worked on the scenes. ‘Animal Treasure Island’ and ‘Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves’ proved to be his next ventures in 1971. Storyboarding and animation in some of the key scenes was provided by him. Then, he moved in with ‘A Pro’ and went into directing Lupin III. This was a television series, which gave him the opportunity to work with Takahata once again. Some other ventures of Hayao Miyazaki are:

All of the above were TV series episodes that he directed. In 1984, “Nausicaa of the Valley” was Hayao Miyazaki’s next film that revolved around ecology. He was the writer and director of the movie. Some other films in his career include My Neighbor Tororo (1988), Laputa Castle in the Sky (1986) and Kiki's Delivery Service (1989).
Porco Rosso in 1992 followed by Princess Mononoko in 1997 and made him a global name in direction. ‘Spirited away in 2001’, a movie by, this Hollywood director went on to become a box office grosser. This film won the Golden Bear Award in the 2002 Berlin Film Festival and also the Japanese Academy Awards for Best Picture. ‘Howl's Moving Castle’ in 2004 won the Golden Osella Award.
