David O Russel is a reputed film director who has been widely acclaimed for his excellent work and unique style. Russell was born in Larchmont in New York. He has done his graduation from Amherst College in 1981. The Three Kings directed and written by him is an existential comedy.
The full-length feature of David O Russel, "Spanking the Monkey" faced a controversy. He wrote and directed this film. "Spanking the Monkey" is a black comedy on a dysfunctional family. At the Sundance Film Festival in 1994, this film received the Audience Award. The film also got two independent spirit awards in 1995.
After finishing his graduation, Russel started as a literacy teacher and political organizer in Larchmont, New York. Later, he also worked as a bartender for catering company. During that period he also wrote screenplays for different movies. Russel did not attend a film school and had no intention to become a filmmaker.
However, he wanted to tell stories to people and this inspired him to make three short films. Theses films were "Bingo Inferno" (1987), "Boston to Panama" (1985) and "Hairway to the Stars" (1990).
Bingo Inferno" is a documentary and "Hairway to the Stars" is based on the beauticians.
"Bingo Inferno" got critical appreciation and was screened at the Sundance Film Festival.
The script for "Spanking the Monkey" was written by Russel himself.
The second feature made by David O Russel, "Flirting With Disaster"(1996), is a dark comedy. This film received wide appreciation though could not hit the box office. The films directed by David O Russel are unique in style and presentation. His ability to create surprising and edgy films has made him one of the remarkable directors of Hollywood.

This film starred Dustin Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, and Jude Law.
