The Griffith observatory is a landmark which one cannot easily forget. It is located in Los Angeles, California, United States. The Griffith Observatory is perched on the slope of Mount Hollywood in the Griffith Park and overlooks the Los Angeles Basin, downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood and the Pacific Ocean. It is a monument of national pride and displays an extensive amount of information related to space and science.
The construction of the Griffith Observatory started in 1933 and it was ready to display its first exhibit by 1935. The land was donated by Col. Griffith J. Griffith in 1896. He also donated funds for the cause.
The Samuel Oschin Planetarium
This is a very advanced planetarium which will inspire you and fill you with awe. The night sky is displayed very well in this 300 seat planetarium. This is a 200 seat multi-media theater and covers an area of 2,700 square foot. It was designed to complement the planetarium and expand the Griffith Observatory’s planetary programs and educational programs.

Public Telescopes
Apart from its planetarium programs and its educational program called the Griffith Observatory Pilot School Visit Program, the Griffith Observatory has a number of telescopes set up for public viewing. The ‘Zeiss Telescope’ is for night viewing and the Coelostat And Solar Telescopes’ is used for observing occurrences such as solar flairs and sunspots. Apart from the above mentioned telescopes, there are other smaller telescopes available for public use.
The Gottlieb Transit Corridor
This is an accurate outdoor public astronomical instrument. It is 150 feet long and 10 feet wide and is used to demonstrate the motion of the Sun, Moon and stars across the sky. It has the principal components of Meridian line, Foil, Meridian arc and Ecliptic chart.
